Expressed or implied, most therapists have a set of interests at the center of their practice. One may work primarily with couples. Another with eating disorders. The majority of another therapist’s clients may be teenagers. Or people going through divorce. You get the idea. To get the most out of your therapy, it’s best to look for someone who has experience and knowledge in your area of concern.
When you find someone that has the right profile, ask for a phone interview to see if the two of you are a good fit. If it feels right, you’ve found the right person. If not, keep looking. (And don’t worry about hurting the therapist’s feelings.) The focus of my practice is on developing resiliency. Negotiating and managing life’s major ups and downs: growth and grief.
